Who Should be Carrier Tested

  • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has issued opinions that individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish (Eastern European) Descent should be offered carrier screening for Tay-Sachs, Canavan, Cystic Fibrosis, and Familial Dysautonomia.
  • If you are a potential Parent and if you are in a high-risk group or when there is a family history of any of these disease
  • For Ashkenazi Jewish Population, there are a number of other disorders that occur more often in this population and for which carrier testing is available. These include Mucolipidosis (Type IV), Bloom Syndrome, Franconi Anemia. Contact your doctor for more information and testing options.

Facts about Our Family of Genetic Diseases of the Brain

  • They affect the brain and central nervous system and are all fatal!!
  • They affect children first, but are found in all age groups and backgrounds.
  • Carrier Testing/Screening is not 100% and currently is not for everyone.
  • Both parents must be carriers of the gene to have an affected child. (These conditions are recessive.)
  • If both parents are carriers, there is a 1 in 4 probability with each pregnancy that the child could be affected. Just because you may already have unaffected children, it does not mean you will not have an affected one.
  • If both parents are carriers, there is a 1 in 2 chance with each pregnancy that the child will be a carrier of the gene.

The Mathew Forbes Romer Foundation's mission is to promote and lead critical awareness, testing, counseling, and research initiatives that hold promise for the prevention and eventual cure of fatal children's genetic diseases of the brain
